Animals, Known and Unknown
The exhibition at Art Brut Gallery presents the latest series of paintings by Adam Saran, part of the Animals, Known and Unknown cycle.
The works explore human character, depicting familiar media personalities encountered by the Artist during television programmes, alongside family, friends, and acquaintances.
Through his unique approach – observation, intuition, and artistry – Saran conveys the defining traits of his subjects. Figures appear mostly in profile or en face, either static or subtly in motion. Eyes seem almost demonic in their gaze, while forms are transformed, set against uniform backgrounds that emphasise spatial context. Bold colour combinations and expressive brushwork characterise the series as gesture painting.
It is futile to ask Adam Saran why a particular animal embodies a specific person. This is a creative and conceptual shorthand reserved exclusively for the Artist.
