Art Brut
A retrospective exhibition of Art Brut billboards displayed across the city of Lublin, 2015–2024
The community of Art Brut artists and painters from Lublin, as well as observers of the Art Brut movement in Poland, recognised that a retrospective exhibition of their billboard works would be desirable in a stationary format.
Since 2013, the Art Brut Gallery has been operating at the Centre for Culture in Lublin, hosting monthly exhibitions organised by the Teatroterapia Lubelska Foundation, featuring both established and emerging Art Brut artists from Lublin, the Lublin region, and across Poland.
It has become a tradition and established practice of the Gallery to present photographic billboard exhibitions in Lublin’s urban space, displayed on multiple media in the city’s most frequented locations.
This approach to shaping public awareness and promoting a positive image of (dis)abled individuals — creators and co-creators of culture, art, or talented painters — has evolved into a controlled and effective process of educating both the residents of Lublin and visitors from across Poland.
The billboards also featured slogans from social campaigns conducted by the Teatroterapia Lubelska Foundation, for example: Copyright protects the painter’s Art Brut work / I sell, I do not give away / Painting is my profession / I am an actor, and this is my work, among others.
